DETROIT (AP) -- Authorities say a rural postal carrier in suburban Detroit stole and sold stamps worth nearly $20,000 because he was behind on his mortgage.Postal agents confronted John Auito on April 30 outside his home in Macomb. He told agents that he typically sold the stamps at a 15 percent discount on eBay.
The 42-year-old Auito is charged with stealing stamps that were being shipped to retailers in his delivery area. A message seeking comment was left at his home Monday.
Auito told agents that he began taking stamps in September because he feared foreclosure.
Since this guy is a mail carrier, you have to assume he's a little wobbly in the noggin'. So since I'm operating under that assumption, I can safely say this guy probably got confused and thought the postal stamps were food stamps. And since food stamps are like money, who cares if you sell money for a 15% discount? It actually sounds like he was getting the short end of the stick in this deal. For crying out loud, this guy's giving away money, he's a saint! He should get tax breaks!
Kind of convincing, eh? Kind of proves that old adage, "when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me." Except in this case I made an ass out of myself. Shoot.
