Clinton regrets country's name
Eds: APNewsNow.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says it is regrettable that the government of Kyrgyzstan (KEER-guh-stan) refuses to add more vowels to the country's name.
Americans have been struggling for years trying to pronounce the name of the former Soviet nation.
Speaking to reporters at the State Department, Clinton said that regardless of what final decision the Kyrgyz government makes about a possible name change, the United States will proceed with its plans for making up its own name for the country.
She declined to comment on U.S. interest in making new arrangements with another nation -- Ecuador -- for supplying the country some of its extra vowels.
